The term “contingent workforce” refers to a group of employees who are employed on a need-basis by a business organization. Freelancers, independent contractors, and consultants who work on a project-by-project basis and aren’t paid on the company’s payroll are referred to as contingent workers.
They can be hired directly or through hiring agencies. These employees typically join a company’s employment on an as-needed basis and can work both on-site and remotely. In very simple words it can be said that a contingent workforce means employees hired by companies temporarily. These employees have fewer benefits or none and their salary is less than any full-time employees. Contingent workers are mostly highly skilled individuals.
The growth in the contingent workforce came with the rise in the gig economy. Companies are hiring contingent workers to remain flexible. I have seen in the recent COVID-19 situation many companies laid off their employees, as the situation started normalizing and companies started restarting their company instead of only rehiring their former employees they also started hiring contingent workers for flexibility.
Advantages
Talented individuals
Companies get to work with talented individuals, they usually do not get access to. These employees don’t want to work full-time but want to work in a contingent environment and usually want to work 5 days a week.
Flexibility
Employing contingent labor offers businesses the flexibility that they are unable to get from full-time staff. They can adjust their staff during slower times and hire more people as needed.
Inexpensive
Hiring contingent workers is beneficial for companies. For contingent workers, companies typically pay lower salaries and receive no benefits as well. That is, in other words, it can be said that a company saves a lot from hiring contingent workers rather than hiring full-time workers.
Highly specialized
Contingent workers are usually fully trained individuals. They are highly specialized in what they do. Another benefit of working with the contingent worker is that they have lots of experience and thus, they don’t need to give lots of training.
Concluding
It can be said that over the next several years, it’s likely that the contingent workforce will play a bigger role in maximum organizations. Today, many organizations have a mix of contingent and non-contingent workforces. Over time, organizations and companies will be more focused on getting the best work with lesser labor costs.
